In 8th grade, you are looking ahead to the freedom you will have in high school. This year you will meet your high school guidance counsellor, and will talk about high school, college, and even careers. Grade 8 is all about exploration, and you don’t need to panic about this. The idea isn’t to lock you into one path it’s about introducing you to what paths are available.
You will have opportunities to visit your Catholic high school, meet the teachers and new students so that making the transition to grade 9 is easier. Visiting your future high school will give you more confidence going into 9th grade.
In 8th grade, you are expected to read more challenging texts in all subject areas, including religion, science, history, geography, math, and language arts. You will be expected to read in order to find the right answer, but that’s not enough. You also need to be able to infer meaning, to draw conclusions, and to relate one passage to another. Algebra and proportional reasoning in Math has not gone away.
This is the time to really get organized. Are your notebooks organized? Is your locker organized? Keep your agenda book up-to-date and go over it with your parents to make sure everything is getting done.
